Defensive trademarks are identical marks a trademark owner registers for goods or services in multiple classes. Like a shield against arrows, defensive trademarks are deployed to expand the defensive area of goods and services against potential infringement. For example, China’s Lenovo Group has registered its “LENOVO” trademark in all classes of goods and services. However, if the mark has not been in used, it runs a risk of being cancelled.
