On a decree issued by Moscow early last March, Russia has effectively legalised patent theft from anyone affiliated with countries Moscow deem ‘unfriendly’. The decree had declared that unauthorise use of patent will not be penalised. Russian officials had also raised the possibility of lifting restrictions on some trademarks which would allow the continued used of brands such as McDonald’s (McDonald’s had been closing all of its 850 shops since the beginning of the Ukraine-Russia war). The ministry justified their action by stating that this move will help Russia to mitigate the impact on the market of supply chain breaks due to the sanctions of western countries.
