Late last month, South Africa’s Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) became the first Patent Office in the world to award a patent to an AI (Artificial Intelligence) inventor. The application was made by Dr Thaler claiming that an AI system, a device for the autonomous bootstrapping of unified sentience (DABUS) was the inventor for the patent. However, it is important to take note that in the UK, the EU and the US, the application were denied as they are of the opinion that a machine cannot be named as an inventor.
