📁 Prior to 2011, the word “tweet” was not owned by Twitter. Instead, the word was owned by Twittad, a provider of sponsored advertising on Twitter. The Des Moines-based company has trademarked various variations of the word “tweet” including the phrase “let your ad meet tweets” prior to Twitter filing their application.

✍️ Only after years of legal struggle, the word “tweet” was finally transferred to Twitter for an undisclosed amount of money.
