🎲 Monopoly® owned by Hasbro, Inc.
📰 This one is full of irony. Monopoly is originally created based on a board game invented by an American anti-monopolist, Lizzie Magie, in 1903. Magie invented the game as an educational tool for explaining the single tax theory of Henry George. Her board game was filed for patent protection in 1904, and later self-published as The Landlord’s Game in 1906. All intellectual property assets, including Magie’s patent for the board game was later bought by the Parker Brothers as a part of a making themselves as a sole owner of Monopoly®.
📰 After several modifications and re-release by the Charles Darrow and Parker Brothers, the game lost its connection to Magie and her critique of American greed, and instead came to mean pretty much the opposite of what she had hoped. It has taught generations to cheer when someone goes into bankruptcy.
